Did you know?
dyed-in-the-wool idiomatic phrase
- thoroughgoing, complete, uncompromising.
--- WORD ORIGIN There are several theories about the origin of this phrase, most of which relate to the colourfast (farbecht) characteristic of wool.
The most common explanation is that if wool is dyed (einfärben) before it is woven into material, it retains the colours longer than if it is dyed after being woven. Thus “dyed-in-the-wool” implies an inborn or permanent condition.
