(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- Droughts have been reported as long as recorded history. In the Bible in Jeremiah 50:38, we are told that "A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up." The land in question was Babylon, which of course God didn't much care for because of its obsession with idols.
When God made everyone speak a different language, linguistic confusion effectively halted construction of the Babel tower and led to Babylon's destruction.
Let's quickly clear up some modern-day confusion between "drought" (dry period) and "draught" (cool air). A brief glance at the two words gives the impression they would be pronounced almost the same, but beware:
The "gh" in drought is silent, so that it is pronounced like "drowt.".
The "gh" in draught has the "f" sound however, so that is it pronounced like "draft" which is the way draught is spellt in the US.
