drawl
noun or verb

- a slow, lazy way of speaking or an accent with prolonged vowel sounds

(Oxford English Dictionaries)

---
Although in theory anyone can speak with a drawl, this term typically refers to an English accent common in the southern United States. Sometimes referred to as a southern drawl, it might be even more localized (Texas drawl, Georgia drawl). A drawl involves longer vowel sounds and/or diphthongs, which are sounds formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable where the sound begins as one vowel and moves towards another (coin, loud).

It’s impossible to know exactly how the southern drawl developed, but there were two clear influences. One relates to Scottish and Irish immigrants who flocked to Appalachian areas such as West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina in the early frontier days of the United States.

Another key factor was the English used by African slaves. The influence of Black English was felt not only in the fields as the slaves and their masters mixed together, but also in the house where the cooks and other helpers communicated daily with the mistress and the children. Black nannies, who often took care of the plantation owner’s children, also had a big influence on how the children spoke as they grew up.

Etymology: the word drawl probably stems the Dutch or Low German "dralen," meaning to delay or to linger.
