--- Although Hollywood star Tom Hanks has a reputation as being down-to-earth, he often dreamed of being "up-in-space" when he was young boy. He imagined himself as an astronaut. "I would go out and have my own simulated space walks in our above-ground swimming pool. You wear baggy shorts and put a brick in the back of your butt. That holds you on the bottom of the pool, but your arms and legs float up.
And in order to breathe, you get a garden hose and you put it over the side and you stick the garden hose in your mouth. I wore a pair of cheap swimming goggles that were simply hard rubber with a plate of plastic on it.
So I'd sit there under water. The pressure actually pushes that against your face. So I'd be down there with this thing on my face and a garden hose in my mouth and I would be pretending to walk in space.
It always worked until it was time for dinner because my mom would say, 'Larry go out and get your brother out of the pool and off his space walk - it's time for dinner,' and he would essentially get the garden hose and bend it until I couldn't get any air. It is very hard to get a brick out of your pants when you're fighting for your life at the bottom of a three foot swimming pool!"
