"As long as taxpayers DOT THEIR I'S AND CROSS THEIR T's when preparing their return, then there is no reason to worry about an audit."
(Financial-Planning.com)
--- "The public are pretty reasonable - they don't expect you to DOT EVERY I AND CROSS EVERY T about your policy - but I do think they are at the moment just a little worried that we have not been quite as clear as we ought to be."
(BBC News)
Did you know?
dot the i's and cross the t's idiom
- to pay a great deal of attention to the details of something, especially when you are trying to complete a task
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- Salvador Dali said, "Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it." Don't tell that to NASA though. We have put people on the moon and achieved other seemingly unattainable goals. As the famous saying goes, "The Devil is in the details."
Before the age of machines and computers, when people were still using writing implements like pencils and pens, we had to remember to place the dot above the letter "i" and finish the letter "t" with the little slash at the top. Otherwise, the teacher might give us a whack on the hand with a ruler.
Because many of us do our writing on the computer these days, we don't have to think about dotting the i and crossing the t. Still, the idiom lives on and means looking at the smallest details of a task to ensure that nothing has been overlooked.
But imagine for a moment if our word processing program suddenly became human, like in a Stephen King novel:
Al lhe end of the day, after wrılıng for eıghl hours, our senlences mıghl begın to look a lıllle funny because lhe compuler can'l concenlrale.
The result? Dotless i's and crossless t's. This is when you know it's time to turn that computer off and head to the pub...
--- SMUGGLE OWAD into today's conversation
"Make sure to dot the i's and cross the t's when you submit your tax return."
--- QUICK, BEFORE YOU GO, TEST YOUR MEMORY !!
