Flunk is American college slang that is thought to be an alteration of the British "funk," which is university slang meaning "to be frightened or to shrink from something."

Flunk is sometimes used in the verbal phrase "flunk out," as in "He flunked out of college and went on to become a millionaire." How true this sentence rings though. The list of so-called "college drop-outs" who nevertheless went on to fame and fortune is long and includes:

- Bill Gates, who quit Harvard and created the software giant Microsoft together with Paul Allen, who dropped out of Washington State University.

- Woody Allen, screenwriter, actor, director, and producer. Kicked out of New York University after one semester for poor grades. Also dropped out of City College of New York. As he admitted, "I was thrown out of college for cheating on the metaphysics final. I looked within the soul of the boy sitting next to me."

- Richard Branson, billionaire founder of Virgin Music and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Left high school when he was 16.
