They say the dog is man's best friend. While cat lovers may disagree, it's hard to argue with this statement given the frequency with which the word dog is used in various idioms, phrases and expressions. As further proof, unofficial statistics indicate there are more pet dogs in the United States than people in Great Britain.

In the expression "dogged efforts," dogged is an adjective that refers to the persistent nature of our canine friends. There was a time when dogs were not so highly regarded however, which we can see from several expressions that first appeared between the 16th and 18th centuries:

- a dog's life = hard and unpleasant, miserable (I get up every day at 6:00 a.m. and don't get home until 7:00. It's a dog's life!)

- not fit for a dog = something so bad you wouldn't even wish it on a dog (This meal is not fit for a dog!)

- sick as a dog = to be very sick (I won't be coming to work today. I'm sick as a dog.)

- go to the dogs = to become worse in quality or character (My favourite restaurant has gone to the dogs since it changed owners.)

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word dog first occurs in Old English, but the origin is difficult to trace. It's one of a number of English words for animals (all ending in -g) of obscure origin and without cognates in other European languages (hog, stag, pig). The synonymous hound however has its origin in early Germanic languages and hence has cognates in other European languages (German Hund, Dutch hond).
