Did you know?
dissed, past participle of "dis"
slang, verb
- to treat with disrespect or contempt - to insult
( Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)
--- Dis is slang for disrespect and is simply a shortening of the word. It grew out of the 1980s U.S. hip-hop scene, whose language is dominated by black slang.
Black slang is considered a part of African American English, an informal dialect regularly spoken by 80 to 90 percent of the black population in the United States. Also referred to as Ebonics, it shares many linguistic characteristics associated with various Creole dialects. The vocabulary, pronunciation, and unique grammatical structures also bear some resemblance to traditional West African languages.
Since the English language draws its inspiration from a variety of sources, it should come as no surprise that a number of words that were once considered part of African American English now enjoy widespread use. For example, the expressions "hip" and "cool" have strong African American roots. "Bling", a term for flashy jewellery frequently used in popular music and television shows, is another example of African American English gaining mainstream acceptance.
