WORD ORIGIN

DINK, an acronym for Dual Income No Kids, is a demographic marketing term for households in which there are two incomes and no children. DINKs are typically married couples in their late 20s to mid 30s who work in high-paying professions. They are often the target of marketing efforts for so-called "high ticket" items such as luxury cars, high-end home electronics and expensive vacations.

DINKs are in contrast to DEWKs, Dually Employed With Kids, or households with children where both partners work. This segment is a natural target for toys, children's clothes and other goods and services related to children.

Most everyone can find a demographic acronym or catchphrase that fits their situation:

SINK - Single Income No Kids

Yuppies - Young Urban Professionals or Young Upwardly-Mobile Professionals

SPUD - Single Person Urban Dwelling (a fancy way of describing a single person that lives in a big city)

Empty Nester - a person or couple whose children are grown and have left home

Third Ager - sometimes associated with the term Baby Boomer, third agers are classified as people 50+ years of age who want to continue to work and have an active life but in a different capacity than their previous life (second age)

ORCHID - One Recent Child, Heavily In Debt (a term created by the travel industry for people with low holiday budgets who don't want to travel far because they have a small child)

GLAM - Greying, Leisured, Affluent, Married (retired married couples with lots of cash and time on their hands)
