WORD ORIGIN
Etymology: The word devious (circa 1600) derives from the Latin devius, meaning remote or out of the way. The figurative sense of deceitful was first recorded around 1633.
Devious. There is no better word to describe the increasing occurrences of cyberscams. What is a cyberscam? Cyber is a prefix for anything involving computers, particularly the Internet, and a scam is an illegal plan for making money. The Internet is a playground for dishonest people looking to make easy money at the expense of others. Your e-mail inbox (unless you have an excellent spam filter) shows just how common junk mail and cyberscams have become.
Some estimates place the worldwide cost of spam on business productivity as high as $20 billion per year. As a result, governments, businesses and other organisations are implementing systems, and in some cases legislation, in an effort to reduce the amount of junk mail and illegal Internet schemes. Despite these measures, the risk of devious cyber-activity is likely to remain for a long time.
