degree mill (U.S. English = diploma mill) noun phrase
- a usually unregulated institution of higher education granting degrees with few or no academic requirements
(Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)
--- Degree mills are mostly online entities that offer substandard or fake degrees in exchange for payment and not much else. Often these entities will grant a "degree" based on the submission of a résumé that outlines life experience. Some even let the applicant choose their own subject and year of graduation. Others might require the student to do some work, but because of the lack of recognised accreditation or authorisation to grant degrees, their certificates are worthless.
Some unaccredited institutions are honest about their lack of accreditation. However, there are entities which will fabricate legitimate-sounding accrediting bodies in an attempt to make their qualifications look genuine. These "accrediting bodies" are known as accreditation mills.
Some degree mills, in a brilliant example of equal opportunity, do not discriminate based on race, creed, gender or fur colour. Anyone can qualify for a degree, even your dog.
In June 2009, GetEducated.com signed up their mascot Chester Ludlow, a pug dog, to receive an online MBA from Rochville University for his work and life experience. The dog received his instant life experience degree via express mail from the United Arab Emirates one week after paying the "university" $499 (he could have graduated with honours for an extra fee of $100).
