--- Deduction stems from the Middle French "deduction" or perhaps directly from the Latin "deducere" (via the noun "deductio"), meaning to derive or infer something logically. The two definitions of deduction come from the same Latin root. It's interesting to note that the associated verbs for each noun form are different however.
In one of the most famous opening lines in literary history, upon meeting Watson for the first time, Sherlock Holmes say is, "How are you? You have been in Afghanistan I perceive." This is a classic example of deduction in the sense of reaching a conclusion about something by thinking or observing. The verb is to "deduce."
Deduction, as in taking something away, uses the verb "deduct," a word that is often associated with taxes. This reminds us of the story of a little boy who wanted £100 very badly. He prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided to write a letter to God requesting the £100.
When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to "God, Great Britain" they decided to send it to the Prime Minister, who was very touched by the young boy's request. He instructed his secretary to send the little boy £5 as a goodwill gesture.
The little boy was delighted with the money and immediately wrote a thank you note to God which read "Dear God, Thank you for sending me the money. However, I noticed that for some reason you had to send it through London and as usual, those politicians deducted $95."
