data scraping phrasal verb
- extracting data by program from the human-readable output of another program
(Collins Dictionary)
--- Normally, data transfer between programs is accomplished using specific structures suited for automated processing by computers, not people. These interchange formats and protocols typically have a rigid structure, are well-documented and easy to separate into their different parts. The problem is, these transmissions are often not human-readable.
The thing that makes data scraping different from other ways of extracting data is that the output being scraped is intended for display to an end-user, rather than as input to another program, and is therefore usually not documented.
Data scraping often involves ignoring binary data (usually images or multimedia data), display formatting, superfluous commentary and other information which is either irrelevant or hinders automated processing.
Data scraping is generally considered an ad hoc, unsophisticated technique often used only as a "last resort" when no other mechanism for data interchange is available. However, data scraping tools are becoming more popular, especially with people and organizations who have a need to search for large amounts of specific information that is presented in readable form on the millions of websites on the Internet.
