Conscientious stems from the Middle Latin conscientiosus and conscientia by way of the Middle French conscientieux (16th century). The Latin conscientia further derived from conscientem (nominative = consciens) and referred to "knowledge within oneself, sense of right, a moral sense."

Conscientem is the present participle of "conscire (to be mutually aware), which is formed from "com" (together) and "scire" (to know). Scire is the origin of the English "science," the knowledge of something.

The Latin conscire and its various forms eventually gave rise to several common English words that share this same root with conscientious:

— conscious (adj.) = (1) having an awareness of one's environment and one's own existence, sensations, and thoughts (He was conscious of his tendency to talk too much) (2) mentally perceptive or alert (I was fully conscious after the doctor administered the local anaesthetic)

— consciousness (noun) = (1) an alert cognitive state in which you are aware of yourself and your situation (I regained consciousness about 30 minutes after the operation was finished) (2) awareness or concern for a particular issue or situation (The speech was designed to raise the public's environmental consciousness)

— conscience = the part of you that judges how moral your own actions are and makes you feel guilty about bad things that you have done or things you feel responsible for (I have a guilty conscience about drinking too much last night/I did the right thing by calling the police so my conscience is clear)

— conscientious objector = a person who refuses to work in the armed forces for moral or religious reasons (He lived in Canada as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War)
