Confidant is from the French "confident" and Italian "confidente," literally a trusty friend, and eventually from the Latin "confidens," to trust or confide in someone. The switch from the "e" to "a" occurred in the 19th century and may have resulted from the French pronunciation. In any case, both words survived in English, but more about the difference later.

A confidant is someone you trust, someone you can tell your secrets to, such as the time you cried at the end of the movie E.T. For many of us, one or both of our parents are confidants. Or it might be a brother, sister or a best friend. And some people might even consider the local barkeeper as their confidant.

High-ranking politicians and business executives all have confidants because as the saying goes, "Life at the top can be lonely." Regardless of rank and position, we all need someone to "spill our guts to" or "bounce things off of."

The words confidant and confident are spell-checker killers by the way. Although they share the same root (see above), confident is an adjective that means to have the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something (We are confident we can finish the project on schedule).
