WORD ORIGIN
As the American Heritage Dictionary points out, complacency is a feeling of contentment "especially when coupled with an unawareness of danger, trouble, or controversy." For this reason, newspapers and magazines are full of stories about complacent governments, militaries, physicians, corporations and parents who have created harm because they were complacent. The public is also constantly warned about complacency regarding multitudes of things, particularly when it comes to personal health.
Here is a typical headline from the BBC news: Dentists are warning people may be getting complacent after figures showed more than one in 10 people do not brush their teeth each day.
The article went on to say that "the number of non-brushers is eight times higher than last year, according to the British Dental Health Foundation poll of over 1,000 people. And only a third were brushing for the full two minutes - as recommended." But there are still those who take dental health seriously, albeit in an unusual way. The survey found that people who flossed regularly were using bizarre objects including drill bits, shoelaces and twigs. Ouch!
