Allison Morrow - CNN Business (25 August 2021)

Did you

noun - brand name

- a Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine approved by the FDA in August 2021

“Comirnaty” the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine’s new name is intended to combine associations of community, immunity, COVID-19, as well as mRNA, but is difficult to remember and to pronounce according to Lisa Davidson, professor and chair of linguistics at New York University.

According to the FDA, Comirnaty is supposed to be pronounced “koe-mir’-na-tee.”

- The person(s) who came up with this name should never be allowed to name anything ever again. They shouldn’t even be allowed to name their pets. (Christopher Bouzy)

- I feel like the brainstorm session that came up with the name “Comirnaty” either ended too soon or went on way too long (Nick Mark MD).

SpikeVax, the brand name for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency, keeps things simpler, referencing the fact that it contains a coronovirus spike protein, which allows the body’s immune system to develop protections against COVID-19.

These anagrams for Comirnaty: “crayon Tim”, “Roman city”, “acronym it”, “Tiny Marco”,… may help you to remember.

However, my personal memory aid for this phrase is: “Come here, Nati”… because the sequence of syllables nicely reconstructs COM-IR-NATI,…

SMUGGLE OWAD into a conversation today, say something like:

“It’s rather ironic that the non-virality of the brand name COMIRNATY may result in the vaccine being rejected and forgotten.”
