---
Clutter is from the 16th century and stems from a variant of "clotern", meaning to form clots or pile up. The sense of litter or garbage was first recorded in the late 16th century.

In addition to the sense of untidy, which some people have on their desk at work, clutter can also refer to:

- A type of light pollution that is in the form of a grouping of lights which appear to collectively generate too much light at night

- Unwanted echoes in a radar system that "clutter" the signal to be detected

- In marketing, clutter is the large amounts of (often) unwanted consumer advertising. In radio TV broadcasting, it refers to commercials and promotions that don't belong to the current program.
