WORD ORIGIN
Chore (1746) is an American English variant of char, an old-fashioned British English verb that means to clean or tidy a house or office for payment (charlady/charwomen = a woman whose job is to clean and tidy an office or private house). Char in turn stems from the Middle English cherre, "odd job," and from the Old English cerr/cierr "turn, occasion."
As a potential alternative to the charlady, in 2007 engineers at MIT Humanoid Robotics Group developed a robot called Domo that can adapt to situations to assist people with everyday chores, everyday life, everyday work.
Cameras inside Domo's eyes enable him to see and adapt to his surroundings. Twenty-nine motors equipped with computer chips that run a dozen computers continuously update information. Although the robot's inventors say it might be decades before Domo is ready for tasks like cleaning, he can already do things like putting the groceries away on a shelf. It's a pity that Domo is not ready to do the shopping in addition.
