Did you know?
chick-lit slang expression
- a genre of fiction that covers modern women's issues
--- Chick is American slang for a young woman and "lit" is short for literature. The term chick-lit appeared in print as early as 1988 as slang for a college course titled "female literary tradition."
James Wolcott wrote an article for New Yorker magazine in which he used chick-lit to describe the trend of "girlishness" found in the writing of female newspaper columnists at that time. Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding, a prime example of chick-lit, is considered a pioneer work of this genre. A wave of vampire romance novels has also brought attention to this segment of the book market.
In addition to chick-lit, there are also chick-flicks, light-hearted romance films that generally appeal to women. And chick-music is exactly what its name implies, music that appeals to women's tastes. One of the sub-genres is referred to as angry-chick-music, which describes music written and/or performed by women that usually addresses broken romantic relationships.
As if that is not enough, chick-food refers to lighter fare like salads, tofu and yoghurt. And soon we can expect someone to introduce the word "chickfast," a morning meal for women that consists of toast and tea instead of bacon and eggs.
