caucus
noun

- a meeting of members of a political party for the purpose of choosing candidates for an election

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

---
Particularly in the US, a caucus refers to a political gathering. There the party leaders, registered members of the political party or individual voters meet to decide among themselves which candidate to support.

This was the most common type of gathering in the pre-election selection process until the early 20th century. However, voters and party leaders began to look for a more democratic process, so many of the states began to hold primaries, in which the general public cast ballots to select candidates. More specifically, they select delegates to support their state's favoured candidate at the national party convention.

In an election year for US president, the first caucus takes place in Iowa in February, the national party conventions in summer and the general election is in November.

In both US and British English, caucus also refers to a sub-group of a larger political body. It represents the interests of certain members, such as those from a specific region, those who have the same ethnic background, or who support a common cause.
