In most English-speaking countries, Caucasian is used mainly to describe a group commonly called Whites. As the Merriam-Webster Dictionary states, the modern definition generally refers to a race of humankind native to Europe, North Africa, and southwest Asia and which is classified according to physical features. The term is used especially in referring to persons of European descent having usually light skin pigmentation.

The concept of a Caucasian race or Varietas Caucasia was developed around 1800 by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, a German scientist and classical anthropologist. Blumenbach named it after the Caucasian peoples (from the Southern Caucasus region), whom he considered to be the archetype for the grouping. He based his classification of the Caucasian race primarily on craniology.

The term "Caucasian race" was coined by the German philosopher Christoph Meiners in his The Outline of History of Mankind (1785). In Meiners' unique racial classification, there were only two racial divisions: Caucasians and Mongolians. These terms were used as a collective representation of what he personally regarded as either good looking or less attractive, based solely on facial appearance.

Because of its perceived political incorrectness and lack of a clear, scientific definition, some Americans have suggested use of the term European-American or Euro-American (as opposed to Afro-American, Asian-American, etc.). It remains to be seen whether this term will catch on.
