bucket list
noun phrase

- a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

---
The phrase "bucket list" was relatively unknown until a movie by the same name was released in 2007. In the film, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play two cancer patients who meet in a hospital and decide to create a bucket list, which they eventually check off by doing all the things they came up with. It helped that the Jack Nicholson character was filthy rich of course.

Bucket list stems from the idiom "kick the bucket," which means to die. The origin of "kick the bucket" is not known. One of the more common theories is that it originated from a hanging method, either as an execution or suicide, in which a noose is tied around the neck while standing on an overturned bucket. When the bucket is kicked away, the person is hanged.

Users of the English language have gone to great lengths to create synonyms to express the act of dying and they range from the subtle (pass away), to the not-so-subtle (kick the bucket), the vulgar (croak) and technical (cease to exist), the biblical (go way of all flesh), the official (decease) to the humorous (give up the ghost).
