breadwinner noun
- a person who earns money to support their family, typically the sole one
(Oxford English Dictionary)
--- Breadwinner literally stems from the idea of "winning" the "bread" - in other words, making money to feed the family. This concept is also sometimes referred to as "bringing home the bacon."
Men have traditionally been the breadwinners. The feminist movement has brought about some role changes however. In some families, the wife works full time while the husband stays at home to take care of the children and the house. This arrangement can bring about unexpected problems, like the husband who decided to wash the clothes.
Standing in front of a pile of sweatshirts, he picked out his favourite one and put it in the washing machine. Unsure of which setting to use, he called his wife at work.
"Honey, I need to wash one of my sweatshirts. What setting do I use for the machine?"
The wife then asks, "What does it say on the sweatshirt?"
The husband then replied, "Nike."
