Brainwaves can change the world. Major inventions such as the steam engine, the telephone, electricity, the computer and the Internet were all the result of an idea that over time resulted in an innovation that changed the way we live.

The more common brainwaves are those that occur on a daily basis. Most of them don't have a great impact, but on occasion life-changing brainwaves happen, either for the better or worse. Following are two good examples.

In 2007, two London football fans who dreamed of playing at the international level had a brainwave. Why not find the world's worse national football team and offer to play for them? Their search led them to the national team of Pohnpei, a tiny island in the Pacific and statistically-speaking home to the world's worst national side.

Because regulations required the men to live on the island for at least 5 years before being allowed to play for the tiny country, authorities asked if they could coach the team instead. The two men then spent 18 months putting together and training a team that eventually beat their arch-rival Guam 7 to 1.

In Sunderland, England in 2006, another brainwave ended up with a less than happy ending. Paramedics found a man lying on the ground, suffering injuries that included a scorched colon. The 22-year-old had inexplicably inserted a fireworks rocket in his back side, lay down on his front side, and then lit the fuse in an attempt to make the rocket fly up into the air.

The only problem was that the rocket was pointing the other way! The chairman of the regional firework association issued the understatement of the century when he said, "This sort of thing is beyond belief."
