Don't BOGART    that joint my friend
Pass it over to me
Don't bogart that joint my friend
Pass it over to me

Roll another one
Just like the other one
You've been holding on to it
And I sure will like a hit

verb, slang

- to monopolize or keep to oneself selfishly

---
One of the hallmarks of Hollywood icon Humphrey Bogart was the ever-present cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth. The 60s drug culture seized on this image to refer to the act of keeping a marijuana cigarette to oneself as "bogarting." In 1968 the American blues and psychedelic rock group Fraternity Of Man released their one-hit wonder "Don't Bogart That Joint" (a joint being slang for a marijuana cigarette). The song was promptly featured in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, giving rise to the popularity of the expression and turning Humphrey Bogart into a verb

Bogart belongs to a category of words called "eponyms," or words that are derived from proper nouns. Here are a few familiar, and perhaps less familiar eponyms and their origins:

- watt = a unit of power named after Scottish engineer James Watt

- ohm - a unit of electrical resistance named after Bavarian physicist George Simon Ohm

- boycott = to refuse to do business with someone. Named after Charles C. Boycott, an Irish land agent who refused to conform to land reforms during the 19th century.

- cardigan = a style of sweater that opens at the front. Named after James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan who is said to have worn a knitted waistcoat to keep warm on campaign.

- Mae West = a type of inflatable life jacket in honour of the same-named and "well-endowed" Hollywood actress.
