Bluegrass State

- the state of Kentucky in the U.S.

---
The nickname for Kentucky is the Bluegrass State, which is based on the fact that bluegrass (genus poa) is found in many of the lawns and pastures throughout the state, particularly in the northern part of Kentucky - including the metropolitan areas of Lexington and Louisville.

Kentucky is also the only place in the world that produces bourbon, a type of corn-based whiskey. Although other states produce so-called sour mash whiskey, they are not allowed to call it bourbon because it is not made in Kentucky (Jack Daniels is referred to as "Tennessee whiskey" for instance).

The Bluegrass State is also famous for thoroughbred horse racing and breeding and is home to the Kentucky Derby horse race held each year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, the biggest city in the state. The Kentucky Derby is one of the world's premier horse racing events.

Famous people from the Bluegrass State include boxing great Muhammad Ali, Abraham Lincoln (the country's 16th president), the explorer Daniel Boone and entertainment celebrities such as George Clooney and Johnny Depp.
