WORD ORIGIN
Blither is a variant of blather/blether (to talk nonsense), which stems from the Old Norse bladhra (noun), bladder, and bladhra (verb), to prattle. Idiot is from the Old French idiote (an uneducated or ignorant person) and from the Latin idiota (ordinary person) and Greek idiotes (layman, person who lacks professional skill).
At first glance, the expression blithering idiot seems to describe a stupid person who talks a lot of nonsense. In this case however, blithering is simply used for emphasis. Since we are all human, most of us have felt like a blithering idiot at one time or another. Celebrities are no exception, but some of them are smart enough to invent reasons for being stupid.
Steven Tyler, lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith, was once asked to confirm the rumour that during one particular performance, the band had played just one song (Train Kept A-Rollin) before leaving the stage because they thought they had performed an entire show.
"Oh, no," Tyler replied. "That's what blithering idiots do. We were just drug addicts."
