Blind spot is used in both a literal and figurative sense. The literal definition relates to an area (spot) that is not visible in vehicle mirrors. Blind spots are one of the most common causes of vehicle accidents and collisions with cyclists.

Automobile manufacturers have begun to introduce technology designed to help prevent accidents caused by blind spots. But the best way to avoid such situations is to always look over the shoulder when changing lanes or turning.

In a figurative sense, blind spot basically refers to something (usually a problem or issue) that has been overlooked, intentionally or not. Or it could be an issue that is simply not understood. The press examples below illustrate the various situations in which blind spot can be used this way:

- There continues to be a complete blind spot on the role that energy efficiency has to play in reducing consumer bills over the long-term. (24.dash news portal)

- A blind spot for the US and the Western powers has been their failure to see that by supporting the armed uprising in Syria, they would inevitably destabilise Iraq and provoke a new round of its sectarian civil war. (The Independent)
