Bitcoins are elements or units of money in a digital currency system. The noun bitcoin combines the two words bit (a digital unit, short for "binary digit") and coin, a flat, round piece of metal used for payment.

In the context of finance, the word bit is interesting for another reason, too. It refers to a unit of money, namely one-eighth of a dollar, or 12 1/2 cents. This in turn, was based on the use of the Spanish dollar, which was most commonly used in the colonies in North America. Another term for bit was "a piece of eight".

Although the US established its own dollar-based currency in the late 1700s, "two bits" (25 US cents), "four bits" (50 US cents) etc., continued to be used in the language informally.

Here are some other language expressions with bits and coins.

- two-bit = unsatisfactory or cheap (He gave me a two-bit excuse why he arrived late for the meeting)

- two cents = one's opinion (Can I just add my two cents here?)

- two sides of the same coin = different features of the same idea (Whether the office relocates to Orlando or Raleigh are two sides of the same coin)

- coin a phrase = to create a new expression (Who coined the phrase "life is just a bowl of cherries"?)

-    a coin toss = an uncertain outcome (Whether or not we get the contract is a coin toss)
