big cheese idiom
- an important person
(Collins English Dictionary)
--- Former French President Charles De Gaulle once said: "How can you govern a nation that has 246 different kinds of cheese?" Luckily for him, he was the biggest cheese of all during his time.
In 19th century England, Anglo-Indians adopted the Persian word "chiz", meaning a thing, and began using it in phrases like "This hat is the real chiz" to describe something of good quality.
Since the phrase "the real thing" already existed, it's likely the Anglo-Indians saw an opportunity for a play on words. Over time, chiz began to be pronounced like "cheese" and a new phrase - the cheese - was born.
But since our American cousins believe everything has to be bigger there, they began using the expression "the big cheese" in the 20th century. And like today, it was used in the sense of an important person, along with other similar phrases like "the big fish" and "the big potato."
