WORD ORIGIN

Bespectacled stems from spectacles - another word for eyeglasses - which originated from the Latin spectaculum (a show, a spectacle) by way of Old French and Middle English.

Britain's most famous bespectacled celebrity may arguably be Harry Potter, the fictitious wizard in Joanne K. Rowling's wildly successful series of books. Lesser known, but maybe just as magical is Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards.

Edwards was working as a plasterer in Cheltenham, England when he qualified, as the sole British applicant, for the 1988 Winter Olympics ski-jumping competition. He had previously represented Great Britain at the 1987 World Championships and was ranked 55th in the world.

Edwards was handicapped by his weight (he weighed around 9 kg more than the next heaviest competitor) and by his lack of financial support for training, which meant that he was totally self-funded. He therefore finished last in both the 70 metre and 90 metre events.

Another problem was that he was very farsighted, requiring him to wear eyeglasses at all times. When skiing - and yes during ski jumping - his glasses fogged up to such an extent that he could not see. He also said he was scared of heights. He once stated his philosophy about ski jumping this way: "My ambition is to survive. When I'm up there waiting my turn, I think of a million reasons why I shouldn't go."

Edward's lack of success endeared him to people all across the globe. The worse he did, the more popular he became. He subsequently became a media celebrity and appeared on talk shows around the world.
