ETYMOLOGY
Likely derived from the Latin beneficium, which means for the benefit of.

During the 8th century, Frankish lords awarded land to freemen (non-slaves) in return for services and this was called in beneficium. The Roman Catholic Church originated the concept of a benefice, which involved providing income, usually in the form of land, to priests in charge of a monastery or parish. Over time the benefice was abused throughout Europe and was one of the main drivers behind Martin Luther's push to reform the church, eventually creating the Protestant faith.
