According to a survey conducted by LA Fitness, the sight that the beach-going holidaymaker most fears is a fat man in a tight pair of swimming trunks. Of the 2,000 people questioned, 60 per cent alleged that it was the summer's most unflattering spectacle. The second most feared sight was a man with a BEER GUT removing his shirt.

Some men probably ask themselves why they have a beer gut if they don't drink beer. For beer lovers, there is little scientific evidence of a correlation between drinking beer and having a beer gut. 350 millilitres of beer contains between 100 and 200 calories, so the occasional or even regular pint of ale is not going to force anyone to seek out Beer Gut's Anonymous.

Unless someone is washing down a six pack a day, the bad news of course is that something else is causing that belly to protrude, be it the body's metabolism, bad eating habits, lack of exercise or the snacks that go nicely with beer.

The medical term is "central obesity", a harmless sounding expression in contrast to other slang phrases for beer gut such as beer belly, beer pot, pot belly, paunch and middle-age spread. Other similar phrases are "love handles" and "spare tyre", which refer to fat that collects on the sides of the abdomen, and "muffin top", which is a pejorative term for someone whose gut spills over the waistline of the trousers.

Although it may be politically incorrect, the fact is that men suffer significantly more from the beer gut than women, which reminds us of this joke:

What did the pregnant lady say to the beer-guzzling man standing on the street?
I'm 5 months pregnant. When are you expecting?

Etymology: gut stems from the Old English "guttas", meaning the bowels and has long been synonymous with the stomach, in both a literal and figurative sense. The origin of the word beer is heavily disputed, but likely stems from "biber", the common Latin name for beverage.
