Backwash, a compound noun that combines "back" and "wash," has several definitions. In geography, the term "swash" refers to the white foamy water that rushes up on an ocean coast. The friction and the pull of gravity then cause the water to flow back towards the sea. This return flow is called backwash.
Backwash also refers to the wave that spreads behind a boat as it moves forward, as well as the flow of air that is driven backwards by an aircraft propeller.
In water systems that rely on filtering, such as municipal drinking water and swimming pools, backwash describes the process of reversing and increasing the flow of water to loosen particles in a clogged-up filter.
In a figurative sense, backwash describes the after-effects of something. Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal used the term to argue that economic growth in one area adversely affects the prosperity of another. Wealth and labour move from poorer, peripheral areas to more central regions of economic growth and the industrial production of wealthy regions may well undercut the industrial output of the poorer regions. This draining of wealth and labour together with industrial decline is the backwash.
