Anathema is taken directly from the Greek anathema, which meant "something that is devoted or dedicated" (to God) and in the New Testament, "something dedicated to evil and thus accursed."

In the Old Testament the word meant anything that was identified for sacrifice and thus banned from profane use and dedicated to destruction, as in the case of the enemy and their cities and possessions in the case of religious wars.

In the New Testament, anathema is used in the sense of a curse and the forced expulsion of someone from the Christian community, which is known more commonly as excommunication.

Modern usage generally refers to something that is against a certain principle or idea (Government regulation is anathema to the pure capitalist) or something that someone strongly dislikes (Garlic is anathema to the vampire).
