Did you know?
air rage noun phrase
- aggressive behaviour by an airline passenger that endangers the safety of the crew or other passengers
(Collins English Dictionary)
--- Etymology: air, as in air travel, plus "rage" as in extreme or violent anger. Rage stems from the Old French "raige," the Middle Latin "rabia" and the Latin rabies, as in to be raving mad like a dog with the rabies disease.
Air rage is one of several expressions originally started by the term "road rage," which describes aggressive behavior by a vehicle driver. While it may seem instances of air rage are on the increase, especially given the extra security precautions implemented by the airline industry after September 11, some experts believe it is simply being reported more frequently. The media of course delight in reporting air rage activity when it involves a celebrity. Here are a few famous examples:
- Naomi Campbell - No report of any kind of public rage would be complete without the English super model. She apparently kicked and spit at airport police officers after she discovered one of her bags missing at Heathrow Airport.
- REM guitarist Peter Buck was reported to have smashed a tub of yoghurt with his fist, overturned a service cart and then finished the performance by marking his territory in the toilet. He later blamed his behavior on a combination of wine and sleeping pills, which obviously did not work.
- French actor Gerard Depardieu was on a flight from Paris to Dublin when he heard nature's call. The flight attendant told him the plane was taking off and he'd have to wait 15 minutes. Depardieu promptly dropped his trousers and relieved himself on the floor, in front of stunned passengers. The Air France Jet returned to the gate, and the flight was delayed two hours so the cabin could be cleaned.
