What do the adjective adamant and the noun diamond have in common? Perhaps more than one might think. After all, the diamond is one of the world's hardest minerals and the underlying sense of adamant refers to remaining hard about one's opinion. But there is even more to the story.

The word diamond actually stems from the Greek adamas, meaning unbreakable, invincible. The Greek adamas probably derived from "a" (not) + daman (to conquer or tame).

The modern adamant, although it has its roots in the Greek "adamas," nonetheless came to English via the Old French adamant and directly from the Latin adamantem by way of the Old English "aðamans," which referred to a very hard stone. In prior European myths and legends, adamant was a legendary stone said to be impenetrable, often identified with the diamond or loadstone.

The figurative sense of unshakeable or unwavering first appeared in the middle of the 17th century. This etymological evolution, from Greek and Latin to French and then English is common to a wide range of words in the English language.
