The problem with many of the digitized books sold commercially is that they're expensive, they're often ABRIDGED, and they don't come in a format that is easily accessed by the visually impaired.

Abridged literary works have always been controversial. Purists argue that removing any text from an original book or novel is akin to committing a crime. Abridged versions of many classic works can be found these days, including such tomes as Tolstoy's War and Peace, which is not the longest book in the world despite its reputation. There are even abridged versions of the Bible, which some people consider an act of sacrilege, although it is difficult to say what the original version is since it is actually a collection of many different books or writings.

Some books are short even without being abridged. Our search for the world's shortest novel brought us to a work by Guatemalan author Augusto Monterroso Bonilla, whose book "El Dinosaurio" ("The Dinosaur") consists of the following text:

"When [s]he awoke, the dinosaur was still there."

For those who love trivia, tracking down the world's longest book is no easy task. The answer depends on what criteria are applied. For our purposes, we searched for the longest novels in Latin or Cyrillic alphabets that were published through a company. According to Wikipedia, the first four are French novels with Artamène, ou le Grand Cyrus by Madeleine and Georges de Scudéry topping the list at 2,100,000 words.

The longest English language novel is apparently Clarrisa by Samuel Richardson with just under 1,000,000 words. The longest self-published novel, sometimes referred to as "open source", is Marienbad My Love by Mark Leach which contains a whopping 17,000,000 words.

Etymology: Abridged is from the Old French abregier, to "diminish, shorten," and from the Lower Latin abbreviare, to "make short" (see abbreviate).
