In the American Wild West where local sheriffs didn’t have the resources to track down outlaws like the infamous Jesse James, so-called “wanted” posters offered a reward to anyone who could capture the fugitive. Really dangerous outlaws were put in the “wanted dead or alive” category.
Hollywood has romanticised bounty hunters as cynical loners in classic films such Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western “For A Few Dollars More” with Clint Eastwood.
As of the 21st century, bounty hunting for criminals is still practiced in the United States, India, and the Philippines. In most other countries it is illegal and classified as kidnapping.
