ORIGIN

Tigger is a fictional character, similar to a tiger, originally introduced in the 1928 story collection The House at Pooh Corner, the sequel to the 1926 book Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne. Like other Pooh characters, Tigger is based on one of Christopher Robin Milne’s stuffed toy animals. Tigger appears in the Disney cartoon versions of Winnie the Pooh and has also appeared in his own film, The Tigger Movie (2000).

Tigger is known for his distinctive orange and black stripes, large eyes, a long chin, a springy tail, and his love of bouncing. As he says himself, “Bouncing is what Tiggers do best.”

TIGGERENGLISH

Tigger’s language is full of mispronunciations, misspellings, and unnecessary syllables. Examples include pronouncing “villain” as “villian”; “terrible” as “terribibble”; “regulations” as “regularations”; “recognize” as “recoganize”; “suspicious” as “suspicerous”; and “ridiculous” as “ridickerous” (or “ricky-diculus”).

SYNONYMS

There are hundreds of English words to describe great joy and energy. Here is a small selection of some of my favourites. Just reading them makes one feel good, doesn’t it?

abubble, abuzz, aquiver, bright and breezy, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, cock-a-hoop, chirpy, daffy, devilish, effervescent, elfish, enraptured, fluttering, fresh as a daisy, golden, gushing, husky, like Piccadilly Circus, kittenish, full of the joys of spring, in fine feather, in full swing, in the pink, nutty, outdoorsy, pizzazzy, pulsating, quaking, quivering, quick on the trigger, rascally, reverberating, rhapsodical, sassy, scintillating, shuddering, slaphappy, sparky, sunny side up, throbbing, TIGGERISH, tricksy, up to snuff, whip-smart, zingy.

SMUGGLE OWAD into a conversation today, say something like:

“They become quite TIGGERISH whenever they’re together.”
