The lunacy of television

On January 27th, 1926, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird gave the first public demonstration of television in London.

Baird, a bespectacled eccentric, admitted during his demonstrations that the whirling disc which he had developed for TV transmissions was "a most dangerous device liable to burst at any moment and hop around the room with showers of broken glass". As a result, many people considered his invention sheer lunacy.

During a visit to the offices of the Daily Express, the newspaper's editor reportedly told his staff: "For God's sake, go down to the reception area and get rid of that lunatic who says he's got a machine for seeing by wireless!"

Etymology: formed from the noun "lunatic", a crazy or foolish person, which is from luna, Latin for moon. This stems from the old myth that people can go crazy depending on changes in the moon.
