SWAT team
acronym

- Special Weapons and Tactical team

---
A SWAT team is an elite paramilitary tactical unit in American law enforcement departments. They are trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside the abilities of regular officers. Their duties include performing hostage rescues and counter-terrorism operations, serving high-risk arrest and search warrants, subduing barricaded suspects and engaging heavily-armed criminals.

The first SWAT team was established in the Los Angeles Police Department in 1968. Most countries and major cities around the world have SWAT teams, but many go under different names such as elite unit, special forces or special operations. The Scotland Yard SWAT team in London is called CO19 for instance.

SWAT team is also used in a figurative sense as evidenced by the second press example. In this case, it refers to a group of people with special knowledge and/or skills who are tasked with resolving a specific problem.

Although pronounced the same, SWAT is not to be confused with SWOT, which is a strategic planning method for evaluating the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture.
