Snigger is a variant of snicker, which is of unknown origin, but is likely just imitative of the sound. Nearly all of its synonyms, from giggle, chortle, chuckle, guffaw to twitter are also imitative. The noun form of snicker is first recorded 1836 and stems from the verb. Snicker is similar and may be related to the Dutch "snikken," meaning to gasp or sob.

When written with a capital "S" and in plural, Snickers is the brand name of a famous candy bar produced by the Mars Company. Snickers, which consists of nougat topped with caramel and peanuts and then covered in milk chocolate, was introduced in 1930 and was marketed under the Marathon name in the UK and Ireland. Mars says it produces 15 million bars a day, earning the company about $2 billion annually. That's certainly nothing to snigger about.

As for the name Snickers, the Mars family apparently named the candy bar after one of their horses.
