Did you know?
smirk noun
- a smug, conceited, or silly smile
verb
- to smile in an irritatingly smug, conceited, or silly way
(Oxford Dictionary)
--- How can you tell if someone is smirking, especially if they are looking at you? It's not always easy to know and it can depend on the situation. A smirk is a grin of self-satisfaction that is intended to convey a message without saying anything, such as:
- I told you so. Imagine you have a disagreement with a co-worker about a particular issue and it turns out that your colleague was correct. The evil little grin on his face as he confronts you later at the water cooler is a smirk.
- I caught you. After jaywalking (crossing a road on foot when the "don't walk" sign is illuminated), a policeman hands you a ticket and says "Have a nice day!" The silly grin on his face is a smirk.
- I'm smarter than you. The grin on your teenager daughter's face after she beats you at a game of chess is surely a smirk.
- I'm better than you. At the weekly football game that you play with friends, one of your mates scores a goal while you try to defend him. He not only celebrates. He smirks at you.
- I'm in a position of power. After arguing with a worker at a government office about a form that was incorrectly filled out, you return with the (hopefully) corrected form and are greeted with a smile. Or is it a smirk?
