Many sports involve the use of a ball, such as basketball, football/soccer, golf, tennis, cricket and baseball, as well as rugby and American football, although the objects used in the latter two games are egg-shaped.

Some sports involve objects other than balls. In hockey, the plastic disc that players shoot across the ice with their sticks is called a puck (possibly from the verb puck, meaning to hit or strike). In curling, teams gently push round discs called "stones" down the ice.

In badminton, that peculiar-looking object that players smash back and forth over the net is called a shuttlecock (also bird or birdie for obvious reasons). The name stems from shuttle, as in travelling back and forth, and cock, which is another name for a rooster (the shuttlecock feathers resemble those of a rooster). Shuttlecocks can be made from real or synthetic feathers.

For those who may have wondered where the name badminton comes from, it refers to Badminton House, the name of the Gloucestershire estate of the Duke of Beaufort where the game was first played in the mid 19th century.
