ORIGIN

For the first time in history, the US is in a “SHECESSION” – an economic downturn where job and income losses are affecting women more than men.

The term was coined by C. Nicole Mason, president and chief executive of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), in March 2020. Mason wanted to highlight the disproportionate impact of this economic downturn on women.

"More than 11 million women have lost their jobs and another 2.65 million have left the workforce since February, according to an IWPR analysis of labor department data."

“MANCESSION”

The global economy is now in its worst downturn since the Great Depression. One of the unique aspects of the current recession is the way it’s impacting women: though men are more likely to die of Covid-19, the pandemic’s toll on employment is heavier for women.

While the 1970s marked the start of ‘mancession’ periods in industries like construction, the current ‘shecession’ is heavily affecting sectors like hospitality, personal care, retail, and food service.

Globally, women’s job losses due to Covid-19 are 1.8 times greater than men’s.
