guesstimate
noun and verb
- an estimate usually made without adequate information
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
---
Guesstimate is a blend of two words with similar meanings: guess and estimate.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, to guess is to estimate or conclude (something) without sufficient information to be sure of being correct. It also defines estimate as roughly calculating or judging the value, number, quantity, or extent of something.
Both words mean essentially the same thing, but they make a nice blend, or portmanteau as such words are also called, since the sound of one word (estimate) begins where the first one (guess) ends.
The word guess evolved from the Old English "gessen," meaning to estimate or appraise. It was originally used in the sense of "taking aim" and likely stemmed from a Scandinavian source and ultimately from the Proto-Germanic "getiskanan," meaning "to get."
Estimate is a 16th century word that derived from the Latin "aestimatus," the past participle of aestimare meaning to value or appraise something.
