Encroachment comes in many different forms. There is physical encroachment, such as when the neighbour's tree grows so large that it encroaches on your property. Governments sometimes encroach on the land of indigenous folk or countries may encroach on the borders to neighbouring countries, causing war.

Encroachment can also happen figuratively, such as when a government encroaches on the rights of its citizens or a company on the rights of an employee for example.

And then there is the special case of pitch encroachment. This describes overly-zealous fans who run onto the football pitch while a game is in progress, either because they want to show their admiration for one of the players or because they want to be on television.

During a match between Burnley and Blackburn Rovers, one such fan ran onto the pitch naked and break-danced. The officials were not amused. Nor was his girlfriend, who got him the ticket through her employer. He pleaded guilty to pitch encroachment and was given a three-year football banning order.
