Did you know?

saucy
adjective

- rude and showing no respect, or referring to intimate relations, especially in a humorous way

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
Saucy stems from the Old French sauce/sausse, which derives from the noun use of the Latin salsa, the plural of salsus (salted). The association with cheeky, impertinent is in the figurative sense of "piquancy in words or actions."

Saucy remarks often have sensual undertones. The queen of saucy remarks was the American actress Mae West, who in the 1930s shocked even other Hollywood celebrities with her innuendo and outrageous comments. Here is a sample of some of her more famous sayings:

- I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it.

- I only like two kinds of men: domestic and imported.

- A hard man is good to find. (This is a play on the well-known saying "A good man is hard to find")

- Between two evils, I always try to pick the one I haven't tried before.

- When I'm good, I'm very good. When I'm bad, I'm better.

And finally her trademark:

- Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?
